Rate/Fee Schedule for Fiscal Year 2019-20

Town Tax Rates (effective July 1, 2019)

Real Estate:  17.5¢ per $100 assessed value

Personal Property:  $3.50 per $100 assessed value

Automobile Decal Tax:  $37 per vehicle

Meals Tax:  5.5%

Cigarette Tax:  17¢ per pack


Statutory tax relief qualification criteria for low-income seniors and certain other individuals, as required or permitted by state code, have been revised to align with those of Pittsylvania County.  For detailed information concerning this, please look under the “Town Code” tab above (click “Ordinances” and then “Chapter 3:  Taxation” to read the applicable ordinance sections). 


Utility Rates (effective December 1, 2018)

Water:  $70 + $5.50/K over 6K gallons (billed quarterly;  due 1st day of Mar., Jun., Sept., and Dec.)

Wastewater:  $80 + $5.50/K @ 85% of water usage;  billed concurrently with water

Bulk Water (for irrigation, swimming pools, etc.):  $5.50 per 1,000 gallons

Note:  A revised utility rate structure (to be effective December 1, 2019) is now being developed by council and staff, following input from citizens and an external consulting firm.  We will post the new rate information on this page once that process is complete and approved by council.  Also, please note that the town ordinance book is being updated to remove specific references by section as to rates and fees, and to replace those with the compiling/maintenance of one “master list” of all applicable rates and fees.  This change is to streamline the process, and will be reflected on this page once town council completes the process. 



New water customer (ex: purchasing a home):  one-time $50 administration fee; connection fee of $1,000 or cost of installation + 15% (whichever is greater)

Renters:  $150 deposit required to turn on water in tenant’s own name

Reconnection fee if water is turned off for non-payment:  $50 (must be paid in addition to the total water balance due in order to restore service)

Wastewater:  same fees as listed above for water 

Returned Checks:  $50 service charge (no further checks accepted after two occurrences)
