The Town of Hurt is accepting applications for the position of clerical assistant.  Responsibilities will include:  (1) responding to public inquiries in person or via telephone, email, or social media; (2) accepting payments for town taxes, utilities, services, or other fees; (3) filing and record keeping; (4) assisting the clerk-treasurer with data entry, billing, banking, postal, and other similar functions as needed; (5) functioning as substitute clerk-treasurer when necessary; (6) other related duties as may be requested by the town council/mayor.   

This position calls for an organized multi-tasker with well-developed people skills, communication skills, familiarity with office equipment, along with an open mind for learning and change.  Knowledge of basic accounting/bookkeeping and IT is considered highly desirable.  We use Office 365 Outlook, Word, and Excel extensively. 

As a smaller organization and as a local government, teamwork among staff, council, citizens, contractors, and vendors is essential to success, as is building and maintaining excellent rapport with the community. 

The position is part-time (approximately 24 hours/week), is non-benefitted, and requires a willingness to work flexible hours.  Hourly compensation rate is commensurate with qualifications, and will generally fall in the $9 to $12 range as supported by the town budget.

Announcement of Vacancy (updated Friday, July 12, 2019): 

Hurt Police Department is accepting applications for a full-time officer.  Applicants must be Virginia DCJS certified and pass a thorough background check.  The successful individual will be a team player suited to a smaller organization and to building good rapport with the community.  This is a benefited position with a compensation range of generally $34K to $37K annually (DOQ).
